On Camera Personality

This is something that has been bothering me for some time and I need to finally address it in the form of something more official, for lack of better word, rather than through a comment, etc.
I’ve gotten numerous comments on my lack of enthusiasm and smiles in my makeup videos for some time now and I’ll say it right now, I find it annoying and honestly bit hurtful as well. The two artists over at pixiwoo, who I find to be absolutely amazing, hardly ever smile either, yet I don’t know why it seems that it’s just me who is constantly being singled out for not smiling. For one, being forward and to the point IS part of my personality. I’m just a mellow, laid back person, always have been. I’m not one to say 1000 words per minute nor am I a drama queen. My purpose of making beauty videos to begin with is to strictly be informative. I take a lot of time with my videos and to have people focus purely on my personality is discouraging since that’s not why I make videos anyway. People may not be aware how much I plan for my makeup videos. I’m always brainstorming with looks I want to do, make a list for them, add on Google calendar when I plan to upload X look, then plan when I’m going to apply and film X look in my physical planner. I plan everything since it helps me with time management.
I’m also not one who craves to be the center of attention. I don’t want to be a singer, actress, model, TV show host, reality star, etc. I know there are a number of people on Youtube who are looking to be in the entertainment industry, but I am not one of them. I admittedly don’t have stage or on camera personalities. Some people do, I do not. I don’t have that charisma in front of a camera that Ryan Secrest has and I’m perfectly fine with that. I hate to break it to some people who aren’t aware, but Ryan Secrest looks so cheerful on your TV screen doesn’t he? But once the cameras aren’t rolling chances are he doesn’t have that big grin on his face.
I can give you a show if you want, but it’ll be fake. I’ll tell you right now that it would be a complete lie and while I’m at it, I’ll also tell you to waste your money on this “super awesome product” that I got for free but in reality sucks horribly… but I won’t. Like I said, I don’t have that natural on camera personality where I can light up in front of a camera. I’m not comfortable doing so and I think people should respect that. Some people need to be aware that for a lot of people, how they act in front of an inanimate object like a camera, especially alone with no camera crew around, will be different to when they are communicating with an actual person.
I also want to put out there that just because someone is smiling does not necessarily make them happy and a person who is not smiling does not mean they are depressed. Not everything on the outside is as it seems. Ever read about people who were shocked to find out their friendly neighbor was a serial killer? Let’s not be too superficial here.
In conclusion, I’m not looking to be some kind of internet star. I just like to share any information I know and that’s that. I’m a private person, so I’m not going to throw a bunch of vLogs and videos of me prancing around out there to boost my ego. I’ve taken the liberty to block anyone who expresses their discontent for my dull personality.I don’t want to further torture anyone if they feel that way. Either you’re too ditsy, too cold, too dramatic, or too boring. I’ve accepted that no matter who you are and what you do, there will always be people who disagree with you. Even religious figures and deities get criticized so who’s to say mere mortals are ever immune? I’m not going to fake who I am because not only will I be lying to myself and others, I still won’t satisfy everyone. If you genuinely want to know more about me, you are more than welcome to follow my blog, where I sometimes share my thoughts. That’s as personal as it gets if you ask me. It’s not anything to gossip about, because that’s just not me. If you’re looking for an entertaining and spunky webshow like iCarly, sorry but I can’t offer that.

I’ve been reading your blogs and watching your videos and by this, I can tell that you are a private person with strong opinions.. along with a quirky sense of humor that I like about you. I completely agree with you and I’m glad that you change that about yourself. I remember seeing this one girl on youtube with a very bubbly personality (bubbly to the point where it can be annoying) and she was doing a q&a video and one of the questions was if she was like that in real life. Her answer?.. no. I was thinking why she was acting then? Then you’re being fake.. is it her way of making people like her?
I make youtube videos as well and it was weird at first, but I just talk to the camera like I would to anybody in real life. My personality is pretty chill and what you see is how I am. There are always people who have to nitpick every single thing or ask you to do this or that… why are like this.. blah. If it bugs them so much there is an X button to click.
To be honest, you not smiling in your videos does not bother me at all. I mean, that is just you. I enjoy watching your tutorials and look forward to your upcoming ones as well. =]

*I’m glad that you DON’T change that about yourself.

Liz,
I enjoy reading your blog and watching your videos – you are truly amazing with makeup and have taught me so much! You not smiling doesn’t bother me at all, everyone has their own personality and should be allowed to express it however they want to. I bet most of the people being negative towards you don’t even make videos themselves, it takes a lot of courage to make videos and put yourself out there like you do.
Just keep up the great work and never change who you are for other people!

liz,
i definitely notice your laid-back personality but never thought it to be anything negative. in fact, u seem really honest and genuine thru your videos and there is no reason you need to purposefully smile or whatever more than you normally do. ppl who made those comments are ppl who don’t think before they speak. i love ur gorgeous makeup looks and vegetarian cooking, keep it up!

You’re perfectly fine. Cool in my opinion. Hey you’re not a reality star here. I feel like it’s a waste of time to watch videos which blurb about anything around the world. You’re video is straight to the point and is exactly how I prefer watching.

No offense but I don’t think its your lack of smiles that’s off putting but you don’t even make yourself seem pleasant.
If people have a problem with that they don’t have to watch it but you shouldn’t be that shocked you are choosing to put yourself out there people will let you know what they think

How may I ask, does one superficially come across as pleasant without smiling?
I don’t choose to put myself out there for the sake of stardom or what have you as I’ve stated. If there was a way for me to be able to readily demonstrate makeup application on a monolided person without showing my face, I would.

I personally have no problem with your personality but if your feelings are hurt by people’s comments maybe you aren’t putting yourself out there in the best way for yourself?
Maybe you need to do just close up videos without intros some people even use text without talking.
Think about when you go somewhere and meet some people and they never smile, its just not pleasant, laid back people smile as well..people with a relaxing/pleasant tone and carriage just seem to put you at ease.
Your mannerisms seems to me like your nervous and afraid to seem a little goofy/silly and you are afraid to lose control
Kudos to you for putting yourself out there but maybe you need to take the good with the bad or change something to make it work for you?

My feelings are hurt because one, I feel like people are perceiving me to be some kind of awful person, and two, I do videos for the makeup. It makes more sense for people to say they don’t like my blending, use of colours, etc.
When you are out meeting people it is a natural environment with individuals having conversations with one another. That’s a different situation from being in front of a camera filming yourself. I personally find it difficult to be silly when I’m trying to apply blush on myself. There’s a time and place for that. That would be more easy to execute like in vLogs but I don’t do those or haul videos but I don’t do those anymore either.

You’re fine the way you are. I’ve never ever EVER felt that your lack of enthusiasm (?) somehow takes away from what you’re trying to say. In fact, I like the way you are blunt and straightforward. It makes you seem more genuine, and I take your reviews more seriously. Just my three cents xD

I’m sorry that your feeling was hurt! I would as well. I say, do your thing and don’t get discouraged by those silly comments … people need to be more appreciative and respectful to others, you can never satisfy everyone … people just like to criticize people for no reason …
I happen to find your videos great and to the point and I think you come across as a very straightforward & confident person in a positive way, I can use less drama in life : )

Hi Liz, I have followed you from day 1 on youtube and it has never been an issue for me. those people just can’t seem to understand that people have their own personalities and preferences.. they chose to watch you yet they want to change you..which is the most impossible thing that can happen..I love your videos and how strong your personality is. I chose to watch and follow you because I look up to you and love your personality.Keep it up sis.
