I would never swap for products like mascara and lipglosses. Even the glosses that come in tubes because often times the gloss gets sucked back in. Unless they are from a REPUTABLE artist who knows proper sanitation procedures like using a disposal applicator each use.

So how do you feel about swapping? You know, like Spektra and Makeupalley. Exchanging and receiving makeup, often used. I'm just curious. I haven't done it myself.

I find the reviews and photos online to be alright but often times it's best and saves more time to be able to see a product in person. I can read plenty of reviews but the ultimate deciding factor is what I see in front of me.

I don't actually "test" the products as in use them. I always only swatch items on my hand so I get a feel of the colour, pigmentation, and texture. I wouldn't even use a Sephora tester because I find their sanitation practices to be subpar. I once asked a Sephora associate to sanitize a lipstick for me and she just told me to wipe it with a tissue. Um... no.

Half of the population generally don't have the discipline to keep their thief-ish hands off the testers, especially when the merchandise or aisle is not closely guarded. Even if the sample is glued to the display, people manage to yank it out. Specialty stores like Sephora and Ulta, whose main income depends on the sale of cosmetics, can afford to have their workers watch out for shoplifters (or tester-shoplifters [even more pathetic]). Apparently that doesn't stop certain people though because my Ulta barely has any testers out. It's an inconvenience as a shopper, so what I do before I make a drugstore purchase is search on makeupalley.com for reviews or blogs for swatches. 4/5 times it works. Maybe it will work for you.

I've never tested a product someone has already opened. I usually do the sales associate a favor and place it somewhere they can see so it doesn't get back on the shelf.
